VII is a bit of an identity crisis wrapped up in an album. You have on one hand a very authentic country album, on one hand a funky contemporary indie rock album, and on another a sort of Petty-esque rock ballads with some hints of psychedelia. In essence it's all of Americana wrapped into one. Maybe that is a more accurate picture of American music, but maybe it is too much for one album to tackle.
