Clark's debut, Marry Me, seduces with one hand and stabs with the other.
It soothes without being snoozy and offers a Pandora’s Box of busy musical sprites swirling over foundations of eclectic beats, silky orchestration, and soft creamy vocals that deliver words that can be sentimental or sarcastic.
Annie Clark steps into the spotlight for her St. Vincent debut, with results so inventive and impressive you wonder what took her so long.
It's an orchestral record for those who prefer the simplistic, a darker one for those who prefer theirs twee, love songs for the scorned and sad songs for the content, an engaging and alluring combination that makes Marry Me nearly irresistible, and one of the better indie pop albums that's come around for a long time.
On her debut disc Marry Me, Clark gives her cute intricacies considerable substance and meaning, a crucial distinguishing factor.
‘Marry Me’ is a naturally mesmerizing debut of instantly unforgettable proportions that should stand the test of time.
Marry Me isn’t quite a religious experience, but it’s unequivocally divine.
Her debut British release showcases a vivid and fully formed talent clearly versed in quirky, often humourous songcraft.
Clark wisely decides to strike out on her own with Marry Me, a bold curveball of an album.
There is ample proof on Marry Me that Annie Clark is a precociously talented musician – she has mastered the apparatus but hasn’t yet the skill to carry off all the experiments. Her song writing isn’t quite a match for her musical chops.
Clark never seems able to strip away all the orchestration to show true emotion on Marry Me.
Prior to taking on the St. Vincent moniker for her music, Annie Clark got her first exposure from a brief stint in the often crowded collection of artists in The Polyphonic Spree, then transitioned into a touring musician with Sufjan Stevens. One wouldn't quite call these humble beginnings, but Clark could have easily been nothing but a forgotten name in a giant list or a formidable touring artist who could help make others sound better. This wasn't Clark's destiny, and thank god it wasn't. As ... read more
St. Vincent Deep Dive #1: Marry Me
Annie Clark, also known as St. Vincent, is a music artist that I’ve ignored for quite a while despite the praise she gets. Only this time, nobody recommended me her music. I decided to check out her debut album first since that’s what I almost always do when checking out discographies for the first time.
This album is incredible. I’m looking forward to checking out the rest of her discography.

Annie Clark's very first release under the St. Vincent is a promising one, showcasing a level of quirky charm that barely begins to highlight the promise of this exceptional artist.
Marry Me is St. Vincent at her most simple, and yet, Annie's music at even this point maintains a level of intrigue with its switching of aesthetics from track to track. There's not one song on here that sounds the same -- illustrating this theme is the first three tracks of the record alone, the opening 'Now, Now' ... read more
St. Vincent - Marry Me: ✦✦✦½✧
It started so promissing but after that interlude it went down a little with the jazz stuff…
⧽ Best: “Now, Now”

Woah woah woah do you at least wanna go out for dinner first or something..? Like god damn you’re movin fast 😵💫
What an INCREDIBLE debut what the fuck?? I decided it was about time to go through every St. Vincent album. I’ve heard about her a lot and I’ve also listened to Daddy’s Home, her most recent album. I thought that album was great, so going into her music I was excited. And my god.. I was not expecting something this good right off of the bat. Marry ... read more
