It’s tempting to call Not Music a return to form, though that’s hard to say because Stereolab never suffered a real drop off even after it was past its mid-1990s prime.
Instead, the set continues in the taut, propulsive pop vein of their more recent releases.
Despite its unprepossessing title, Not Music is put together as meticulously as any Stereolab album released during the band's 18 years of service.
This is great for them, but for the listener it’s a bitter sweet comfort and feels akin to insincerely wishing well to an ex who has happily moved on.
