Paradoxically passionate but controlled, uncompromising but instantly likable, All Eternals Deck is a certain career highlight for Darnielle.
In many ways, All Eternals Deck, his greatest work since 2005's The Sunset Tree, is the perfect final album, fixated on death, legacy, survival, and an uncertain future.
All Eternals Deck is a thankful reminder that when a real talent is given the time and space to flower, the rewards will be reaped further down the line.
Darnielle seems to be pushing himself here more so than any album since The Sunset Tree.
Eternals is not a Death Metal record in the slightest, but easily the most bandy album in the Mountain Goats discography.
This album is hard work, but, inch by wretched inch, it becomes worthwhile.
