Much closer to Z than Evil Urges, My Morning Jacket proves that a leap back can sometimes be a step in the right direction.
It’s an album containing 10 diverse songs—all performed with near immaculate precision—that reward with repeat visits.
Circuital is a return to form, but it brings into play all the disparate evolutionary elements that have made My Morning Jacket a staple of the summer festival circuit.
While Circuital is closer, certainly, to 2005's Z than Evil Urges, it doesn’t feel like a step backwards, or even like a lateral hop.
Circuital can’t be marked down as a failure; it’s just not as good as it could be, or as its best tracks suggest it might have been.
MMJ has found prime real estate on the premise of becoming a commercial parody of themselves.
