If Channel Orange was Frank Ocean's pop breakthrough a la Lil Wayne's Tha Carter 3, then Nostalgia, Ultra. is Frank's Da Drought 3, due to its hype-building off of covers of other artist's material. Here, when Frank isn't turning modern rock classics like "Hotel California" and "Electric Feel" into songs about sex and partnership, he's churning out better new material. "Novacane" and "Songs for Women" are just as likable now as they were in 2011.
The mixtape that introduced me to radiohead and R&B music in general.
A great mixtape from Frank Ocean. It may not be as atmospheric or expansive as his newer material, but he still offers intimate, albeit a bit cringey, lyrics, and great vocals. The clear standouts are Novacane and Songs For Women. Lovecrimes and There Will Be Tears are the worst songs on here, but they are still listenable. A nice sample of Hotel California on American Wedding too.
What a marvelous songwriter
glorious. better than CO in about every way tbh
