CRITIC REVIEWS

Pitchfork

Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments pt2 is a release for established fans, people who want to know what his pieces would sound like in an altogether different setting.

80
Drowned in Sound
In short then, this EP is a welcome reminder of James’s ability to utilise decidedly avant-garde ideas in a manner that, although acutely alien to our idea of musical normality, is nevertheless engaging and inspiring.
75
The Line of Best Fit
This feels like a collection of ideas and textures rather than an intentionally cohesive, fluid piece of work.
70
SPIN
This EP is spacious above the obvious clutter, and its grooves more resemble that of a funk garage band, thus there's more to be filled in.
70
Rolling Stone

The adroit android thump of "diskhat ALL prepared1mixed 13" and the contemplative "DISKPREPT1" show the maestro finely mincing live drums and instruments into a sweet treat.

66
Resident Advisor
James spends most of the EP in that exploratory mode, and though there's a certain pleasure in listening to an artist figure things out, a full 28 minutes feels like overkill.
60
NME

It is occasionally quite beautiful ... Mostly, though, you suspect Richard D James makes this sort of music as a challenge – to his audience, and to himself.

60
The 405
It's disappointing in some ways that quite a chunk of the record feels like offcuts; of precisely what, we can only wonder.
60
Exclaim!
While mere scribblings from a musical genius can often still trump the best efforts of many, this is not the case here.
60
Tiny Mix Tapes
Some tracks are stunning, others pass by unnoticed. The fact that we have them is beautiful enough.
40
AllMusic

Had this arid content preceded Syro, a fair portion of James' fan base would have likely written him off.

diskhat1 wants me to make me jump on a car in the middle of traffic and do the default Fortnite default dance

Diving into yet another Aphex Twin EP, Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments pt2 is one of the few that I haven't heard anything from, so I was very curious going into it, especially based on how all the sounds have been created with a computer. It's arguably also his most hated project/EP, so I was very interested to see what's the deal.

Anddd, I don't get the hate? This is just a ... read more

Aphex Twin - 15/18

What? Why the fuck does this even exist? This is just the most meaningless, boring, and uninteresting material Aphex Twin has ever put out, and I genuinely can’t for the life of me understand why it’s even a thing.

This EP is basically just a collection of tracks that feature computer programmed acoustic instruments. This was also happening on Aphex Twins’ album”drukQs” but the difference is that on that album everything actually had meaning ... read more

Probably one of the most nothing albums I’ve ever heard. This doesn’t sound horrible or anything but it’s just not interesting at all.
