it would have been a 78 but "Silver Dagger" took me some places I didn't want to visit

I really liked Welch's somber tone and lyrics in this album. The instrumentals are pretty calming and the Appalachian style is entertaining. There are some moments where I think this album could benefit from some more versatility in the instrumentals, but it is still solid.

Gillian Welch is a pretty impressive woman. She can wait eight years between albums, then return and make music as if nothing changed, and it will go down as yet another contemporary folk classic. It wasn't a snoozefest, but the lyrics and melodies were too conventional for my taste.

One of my favorite albums ever released. Gillian's voice and lyrics and Dave Rawlings guitar in perfect harmony.

Gillian Welch outdoes herself with this album. The guitar work is so friggin' stunning. There are these moments where she turns from her typical minor chord progressions to incorporate these major chord moments, and the effect is transcendent. For me, this is Americana at its best. The album plays with tradition, and it is an exploration of the American songbook through stories of struggle and failure.
