It doesn’t take much to decipher the themes Bristol’s Spectres are exploring on their debut album. The 10 songs on ‘Dying’ are as troubling as the disfigured face that adorns its sleeve.

The Line of Best Fit
It's a noisy little beast that will leave you feeling somewhat battered, disorientated, but actually, the stink of the corpse of rock has never sounded so good.

Drowned in Sound
Regardless of their propensity to go "one louder" at every available opportunity, Spectres also possess an arsenal of actual songs at their disposal.

DIY
Veering from post-rock infused soundscapes to twisted chunks of noise-pop and back again without a single, fleeting glance over their shoulder, the four-piece from Bristol know exactly what they want.

The 405
Although there are many revivalist bands being tagged as shoegaze and psych-rock, none of them are using their music as an aural assault weapon in the way Spectres are.

Spectres are driven and alert, forcing the noise forward like a drill, attacking the senses with unrelenting abandon.

Loud and Quiet
For the most part, this is impressively doomy, monochrome stuff, equally helped and held back by the abundance of familiar flavours in unfamiliar settings.

Dying doesn't amaze me at all, but its still a strong shoegaze album, Noisy, messy, loud and reverberated.

Recently in the news for recording an alternative James Bond theme (because the film's called 'Spectre' and the band's called 'Spectres', y'see?!), Spectres do the whole super-noisy shoegaze thing pretty well. even if you won't necessarily remember a great deal about their debut LP.

Standout tracks: Mirror, The Sky of All Places, Where Flies Sleep

Listen if you like: Hookworms, TOY, and accidentally leaving your vacuum cleaner on whilst listening to kraut rock.

Inauthentic and contrived and whatever other labels you want to read while looking at low user reviews for this album in your local coffee shop.

If the title and cover don’t quite get the message across, let me be clear: This album wants nothing more than to unsettle you in your easy chair. The opening track “Drag” features a minute of disparate noise not unlike something you’d hear coming from a slaughter house run by Mike Patton. Then, the gloves come off. “Where Flies Sleep”, the album’s single, is a shambling corpse at break neck speed granting no escape. Howling feedback and a driving thrum ... read more
