A near perfect album by a performer who seems, at least for the time being, to have learned to focus his wide-open talents on one narrow vein of material, and in the process has struck pure gold.
Ashes & Fires remains compelling throughout thanks to its peaks and valleys.
None of the songs sound out of place, there's no self-indulgent noodling, and it genuinely feels like his most complete record since 29.
‘Ashes & Fire’ is a stunning, stripped-back, heart-on-sleeve record that re-captures his irrefutable songwriting ability.
Ryan Adams manages to escape Ashes & Fire unscathed, avoiding his own biggest enemy from previous works: himself.
While Ashes & Fire is somewhat one-dimensional, it at least picks one of his better dimensions.
Ashes & Fire isn’t quite enough to thrust Ryan Adams back into the spotlight, but it is enough to convince those who’d given up on him to maybe offer him another chance.
