Beats Per Minute

Not as much here quite consistently matches the melodic transcendence of Balloons‘ highlights, and that Thurday manages to stand on its own at all is an achievement in itself.

Consequence of Sound

The album is incredibly solid and even more successful when viewed in perspective.

No Ripcord

The music is busier, giving Tesfaye less space, but it sounds more like part of an overall evolution than a mistake.

Pitchfork

Though there's less breathing space on Thursday, and fewer melodic hooks, it still feels of a piece with House of Balloons.

The Weeknd's darkness is more apparent here on any other project, with mostly favorable results. Within the Trilogy, this particular tape serves to explain the type of woman that The Weeknd finds himself constantly enthralled with. It's extremely interesting to watch his storytelling improve with this album as he takes on the role of conveying a story of the very woman he finds himself mystified by- a party-obsessed, drugged up, cast out woman- and he succeeds.

This is substantial improvement over the more vapory sounds of House of Balloons. Thursday is a lot more hard hitting and lyrically darker.
