After Drop some might have expected Thee Oh Sees to continue to explore their softer side, Mutilator Defeated at Last confounds those expectations. Blows them up, really, in a giant fireball of guitars, noise, and psychedelic power.
As with Drop, this extra polish and attention benefits Mutilator. There are tasteful psychedelic embellishments—synth wooshes, delay trails—and new instrumentation, like electric organ and acoustic guitar.
While not front-to-back pummeling, Mutilator Defeated At Last is fast and hard for much of its 33 minutes.
Mutilator is a hulking beast that covers a great deal of distance — as much as any other Oh Sees album to date.
Withered Hand at full volume destroyed the shit out of my ears, but its also the best experience I've had listening to a song in a while!!!!!
Listened to this on a stroll today and absolutely LOVED it!! This is my first experience with Thee Oh Sees so I didn't really know exactly what I was getting into, but I was not disappointed when I got smack in the fucking face with psychedelic punk-adjacent bangers from front to back!! I got a lot of King Gizzard vibes from this. Mutilator Defeated At ... read more
Altho I didn't find it super engaging throught, the solid production and tight performances do give me most of what I want in a record in this style
Fav Tracks: Web, Withered Hand, Turned Out Light
Clearly one of their most accessible, heavy psychedelic rock with a new indie pop appeal; but they've got more far reach albums, experimentally, if you're an old school psychedelic fan who's followed the genre for years.

Was recommended listening to this since they said it was "the most similar to King Gizzard". The only album by Thee Oh Sees that I have listened to, at the time of writing this, was Intercepted Message, for the sake of checking it out last year. I thought it was decent but wasn't the biggest fan of it. This album I enjoyed more, but it's another case of Intercepted Message, where they just aren't really my thing. Will I check out future albums? Yeah, probably, but I can't imagine ... read more
osees martahon goes on
fuck it this ones the best osees album. i always preferred carrion crawler but this one has finally won me over. first of all i want to say the drumming is incredible it may be my favourite out of any osees record. yeah this one is super consistent and the atmosphere is kinda eerie at times which makes for a really interesting listening experience. there are of course the heavy and fast paced ragers as usual on this but the more toned down stuf is also fantastic. the ... read more
