Beats Per Minute

Cole is a man to himself. He was faced with ignorance, and cranked out a hit album in its face.

Consequence of Sound

The Sideline Story is a safe album; rarely shooting for the stars, it consequently lacks extreme highs.

PopMatters

For whatever flaws listeners might be able to take away from Cole World, it’s near impossible to argue it’s not an easy or flagrantly enjoyable listen.

Pitchfork

It doesn't help that Cole brings the least-flavorful bars of his career to his debut, aiming, most likely, for something more universal than his diaristic mixtapes.

Boring, not even close to on par with his later work

Finally... after seemingly endless months of Cole trying to develop his style and spread his wings, his studio debut came hard, and boasted a multitude of engaging and entertaining tracks, laced with the type of cerebral and introspective and perfectly-timed lyrics that he would continue deliver consistently for the next several years.

When Cole tries to do a heavily conceptual song (Lost Ones) (no pun intended) or later (Wet Dreamz), it comes off as very contrived and corny. When his songwriting is on point though, he delivers a classic.

Give us more of songs like: Lights please, lost ones, never told, breakdown.
None of that: Mr nice watch, in the morning, work out stuff.
Overall a solid album.
