It satisfies our most immediate thirst straight off the bat before venturing into relatively untraversed territory.
With moments of breathing room and stripped melodies, APTBS continue subtle explorations of their strengths and the conflict between cacophony and harmony.
Onwards to the Wall is a compact summation of the A Place to Bury Strangers’ sonics, and does it without feeling that this is merely something that is tossed off or unnecessary.
This new release does function better as a cohesive work, but oddly enough they seem to have restricted their musical vocabulary even further.
Everything on this short EP is good and worth a listen, but its main merit is in laying out a strong path of progression for the band to follow to their next album.
If Exploding Head prompted fears the band might reign in the noise, they were unfounded.
Here, they sound disconnected from what made them so visceral and captivating in the first place, as if they're almost scared to go back.
APTBS has been reduced to a glossed over shadow of their former selves.
