Most importantly among the mood change with Strange, Schaaf lets his guitar rock.
Strange Land still finds Schaaf and co. with plenty to figure out.
There’s a lot that’s commendable about the band’s expanded sound—Tapper’s dramatic rhythm-keeping and Natchez’s creative arrangements provide constant thrills—but there aren’t many tracks that demand repeat listens.
As an album, it’s ultimately too bogged down by its professionalism and erraticism to come together very well.
Yellow Ostrich teeters on the thin line between self-indulgent and meditative on Strange Land
The inconsistency of Strange Land leads you to believe there are growing pains at play, but the shining moments show where the fuller lineup may be Yellow Ostrich's necessary and most logical next step.
