Therein lies the key to approaching Heady Fwends: What at first seems rather silly actually proves to be quite purposeful.

The triumph of Heady Fwends lies the way it sands off the rough edges off 2011’s excess and whittles an honest, enjoyable set out of the mire while coaxing a wealth of unexpected voices into the fray without losing its way.

When you break it all down, the Flaming Lips seemed to have stopped giving a damn, and it’s a wonderful thing to behold

I didn't really think that this album would be anything special with all these random guest stars. I thought it was just going to be a huge mess, but the Flaming Lips actually pull it off pretty well. The guest stars all play a special role in each song. It's very experimental, crazy, and fun.
