Unlike the meticulously pleasant Songs for Christmas, which more or less sounds exactly like what a casual fan (or detractor) might expect a Sufjan Stevens Christmas box set to sound like, the music inside Silver & Gold can be as downright strange as its accompanying accessories.

A Christmas album that sounds good all year round is an achievement that warrants praise and Sufjan, I applaud thee.

It’s an ugly, beautiful, totally fascinating Christmas album, made by the only artist crazy enough to tackle the season in all its sprawling absurdity.

Silver & Gold is a great present unto itself, and there’s certainly enough here to make the Sufjan completest giddy with glee

You can’t help but wonder what Stevens could do with a more concise and serious take on a Christmas album, given how tailored his aesthetic seems to be to the material.
