Tiny Mix Tapes

As fun as it is, perhaps its greatest value is in how it challenges how much I take my amenities for granted, not only as items that make my life easier, but as items that make my toes tap for joy.

At once atmospheric, industrial and experimental, Ultimate Care II is kind of like Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music had the old geezer from Freeport, N.Y. crafted it out of love instead of vitriol.

This is all standard Matmos; nothing here upsets their musical applecart. But the washing machine conceit gives their sample trickery a dramatic edge. It sometimes feels like we're descending deep into the innards of the machine.

Spin
Arguably the second-least obtrusive entry in the Matmos catalog (just behind 2008’s synth-mad opus Supreme Balloon), the smooth, sly Care doubles as a starting point for the uninitiated and a magical, mystical journey into the picayune-cum-avant mass-production hinterlands for everyone else.

Exclaim!

Like much of Matmos' work, due to the fact that they often integrate organic sounds, their ninth LP is largely based on analog rhythms, but the Baltimore duo have managed to give Ultimate Care II an aural and melodic depth not always present throughout their catalogue.

Whether intended to be profound or daft, Ultimate Care II could mean everything and nothing. But when we’re expected to accompany every moment of our days with a unique, specially-selected playlist ... it appears to say that there’s music being made around us all the time: we need only listen.

AllMusic
Equally meticulous and mischievous, this is some of Matmos' most engaging work, especially for fans who are as fascinated by their process as their results.

Pitchfork

Caressing obsolete technology, they've parodied labor's drudgeries as play. Ultimate Care II is a daydream of domesticity, a chore ignored. Call it the revolutions of everyday life.

PopMatters

It’s works like Ultimate Care II that draw a clear line in the sand between thoughtless attention-seeking and a deep commitment to experimentation.

Consequence of Sound
It is a beautiful piece of work with some truly mesmerizing moments that is absolutely worth a listen or two, but when placed next to the scope and execution of their output at the turn of the millennium, it just doesn’t compare. But then, as far as experimental music goes, few things do.

The Line of Best Fit
Unfalteringly postmodern in both its method, subject matter, and the ideals it questions, the concept is interesting albeit a little tired and hackneyed.

No Ripcord

The problem with Ultimate Care II is that it simply drags for too long, making what could’ve been a fascinating EP into a dragged-out, joyless chore.

Matmos delve deep into the musical realm of one of the most essential household appliances and prevail with incredibly creative results. As I kept returning to this, I ended up finding that the overall gimmick of the record was what's keeping my interest. The actual composition itself, while limitless in creativity, doesn't really manage to stay that engaging throughout most of its runtime. The quieter moments especially fail to grab my attention and it's a shame considering they take up the ... read more

Matmos logra hacer de una lavadora una obra de arte, sencillamente es ingenioso, creativo y disfrutable, una pieza de 38 min que vale la pena escuchar y que en los momento finales se siente muy satisfactorio. bravo.

Heavy Pikmin vibes around the ten-minute mark.
Heavy Rubber Johnny vibes towards the end.

A huge reason I love music is how expansive and brilliant it can be.
THIS ALBUM IS A FUCKING WASHING MACHINE CYCLE... JUST...

Although the recording process can seem like a cheap gimmick to garner press coverage, Ultimate Care II works well as an ambient album, There's really no need to pay attention to it; quite like you would with a washing machine, turn it on and let it do its thing.
