Badu has always been ideally positioned between the reverence of classic soul and the irreverence of hip-hop. And on But You Caint Use My Phone she taps into her own language and influence along with everyone else's.

SPIN

What’s most charming about But You Caint Use My Phone is how unpretentiously Badu comports herself, ever-mindful that one of her most special qualities as a vocalist remains her ability to entwine the resilient with the goofy.

Exclaim!

But You Caint Use My Phone is a fantastic collection of songs, and while Badu has dubbed the release a mixtape, it's as strong, cohesive and consistent as any proper soul LP put out in recent memory.

Despite the continuing theme the mixtape is no way disappoints, exuding a level of excitement and appreciation of a body of work that Erykah display’s both through music and her own style.

Erykah Badu really made a whole mixtape based around Hotline Bling by Drake. No I’m not joking.

I don’t know how she managed to squeeze so many tracks out of a single Drake song, but she did.

She even has a rapper doing an extremely good Drake impression on several tracks.
Bizarre.
