Pop, rock, some spoken word and a splash of funk for "Chip On Your Shoulder" give a sense of the musical flavours which marry with the insightful, intelligent songwriting on this hugely entertaining album.
Very much ploughing its own furrow, Confessions Of A Romance Novelist showcases The Anchoress as an artist of bold intent and kaleidoscopic ability.
Largely The Anchoress’ arrival on the scene is a textured and lovingly crafted treat, bursts of melody, backing vocals and tweaked samples making for a lush soundscape.
There is nothing here that is particularly freakish – instead the triteness of Davies’s lyrics, combined with the high drama of her delivery, smacks of inflated self-importance. Pleasant pop that thinks it’s profound.
Early 2000’s Pop formulas with genuine Rock arrangements from The Anchoress nearly make-up for lazy song-writing, but the Piano Ballads at Confessions of a Romance Novelist overstay their welcome. // Full review on https://beforeyoulive.com/2020/12/09/the-anchoress-albums/
I like this album. It's kind of equal parts Kate Bush and Tori Amos. My main problem is that I put it on and kind of background it. It's great to listen to when I'm doing something. But I have a moderately hard time sitting down to just listen to it.
