Chaos can’t exist without a touch of clarity, and if that was their intention all along, then consider The Marriage of True Minds a mild breakthrough.
It’s an album that resembles a scientific experiment: full of possibility, full of calculated movements, full of momentous moments of synthesis, full of potential disaster.
The Marriage of True Minds hits harder and feels more joyfully physical than anything Matmos has done in years.
Despite initially sounding disparate and unfocused, given time, it coalesces into something which is cohesive in its own unconventional way.
The song structures are comparatively comprehensible, and ultimately, the whole process would be somewhat superfluous if the duo weren’t capable of creating something worthwhile to sonically experience.
Even after having listened to this album many times, it seems no clearer as to whether it is a collection of underdeveloped song ideas or the well produced outakes of an intriguing idea.
As a scientific experiment, it may have value, but it does not make for pleasant listening.
choatic crazy joyful everywhere all over the place, yet calcucated and consistently placed. Not as impactful as other material but still good stuff.
