CRITIC REVIEWS

90
Drowned in Sound

While the reverb-laden guitars, heavily distorted vocals and occasional Eighties reference points remain in part, there's something altogether more illuminating about The New Life than its predecessor even remotely hinted at.

80
AllMusic

These songs, and the album as a darkly moody whole, show the band to be growing into masters of crafting modern psychedelia with dark swirls instead of day-glo, and bad trips instead of sunshine days.

80
NME

In places it’s a bit samey, marred by a shortage of songs. But ‘The New Life’ is, nonetheless, a must-listen. Not only for its seductive power, but because it feels unprecedented.

80
The 405

They've finally stuck their heads above the parapet, and this album will announce to the world that they're a band with big ambitions.

80
The Fly

Listening to this album is like rapidly consuming a bottle of gin and then refilling it with your own tears.

75
Under the Radar

The New Life is a fully-formed long player that yields rewards over time, not just 50 minutes.

73
Paste

What the band is doing is creating a unique template of dark, post-punk, garage-y rock, often controlled and sometimes unleashed, that marks The New Life as one of the better albums released so far this year.

65
Pitchfork

For now, Cully's another voice in the crowd in that regard, but his promising talent displayed elsewhere on The New Life suggests that he's one to keep your ears perked up for nonetheless.

60
PopMatters

The New Life seems like a move from a band that was uncomfortable with its sound, and wanted to try something both new (in the band’s terms) and old (in terms of the album’s sonics).

60
Consequence of Sound

Girls Names reproduce favorite sounds admirably, and they’ve chosen an extremely popular era to recall, but perhaps a little maturation in this New Life will get them to an exciting place equal to the one they’d already reached.
