Willing to admit that I had never heard of this guy before. What a brilliant surprise this album was. It's a great fusion of classic soul with modern influences.

He goes for a more anthemic songwriting here that does wonders in some tracks. The consistent character of the album invites to immerse yourself in it. A calm, gracious tone confident about how relevant the message is. It feels modern, a step ahead in a genre that steps back maybe too often.

Soul, soul, soul, somehow reminding the 70ies but in a very modern and own way. An honest and moving album of a very gifted young man.

A more mature performance from Michael with extensive instrumental work that has moved on his work to a higher level. For some his flirty with prog-rock may off put previous fans of his freshman album.

Michael aims to propel his music from the lounge to the theatre and has added his own mark on his already adored sound. This album supports Michael as a contemporary artist intent on impressing you with his own style, rather than just revamping an older sound from his past. If you considered ... read more

It doesn't have to be innovative to make you feel something, it's very far from being a classic, but Michael Kiwanuka finds enough soul and perspective to let you ride through some of the most simple yet beautiful tunes I've heard of this genre in the year. The songwriting is decent and his vocals are good, but it never feels wrong or effortless, it's very weird because you would expect an over the top performance with the lenght of the tracks, instead you get a powerful instrument that leaves ... read more

This is nothing but straight up soul. Michael Kiwanuka does a great job of balancing his feelings on love, politics, and his place in the world. He is clearly influenced by Gaye, Cooke, and other great soul artists. However, it doesn't feel like an imitation, it is truly authentic.

That feeling when you find an oasis after days in the desert is exactly the type of feeling "Love & Hate" conjures up in your abdomen. It's a tremendous album with sprawling guitar solos and exhilarating crescendos that set it apart from conventional soul records.

Notable Songs: "Cold Little Heart"; "Black Man in a White World"; "Falling"; "Place I Belong"; "Love & Hate"; "I'll Never Love"; "Father's ... read more

Retro, but not old fashioned. A solid soul album.
