Junip isn’t a flashy album. On first listen it sounds undemonstrative to a fault. But this is an album full of small but powerful gestures.

AllMusic

A fuller, more focused version of the sound they introduced on Fields, this set of songs is worthy of being Junip's namesake album.

The 405

There's enough intrigue and experimentation to keep even the most fickle and particular mind intrigued, but enough accessible melody, harmony, and genuinely personal and evocative music for it to be worthy of anyone's time.

Under the Radar

When the trio pulls back, they almost consistently find their sweet spot. Less is more-or so the saying goes.

70
Pitchfork

After a while, the album begins to resemble a motivational speech set to music, exhorting its listener while revealing so little about its creators.

70
Consequence of Sound

Gonzalez is too zoned-in here to let his lyrics distract, but more often than not, Junip can essentially be heard as an instrumental pop album with the music feeding and building off itself.

60
PopMatters

If Junip leans in the direction of Fleetwood Mac’s slick pop affect, like Pink Moon, it’s still quiet no matter how loud you crank the volume.

60
DIY

Despite the occasional smattering of experimentation there is little if any progression from their previous material.

A beautiful album; it could be called folk, save for the ornamentation of various sounds that may come from synths, pedals, or post-production - but they are organic & fit to the point that you might not even know they were there.

A top-heavy album, as all the best songs are up front.

Jose Gonzales’s only album (so far) under the name Junip would be at home with his solo albums.
