In the vein of Minus The Bear or Pinback, This Town Needs Guns crafts a very delicate and circularly rhythmic distinctiveness, which is also infused with pop-influenced complexity.
13.0.0.0.0 proves, in its own way, This Town Needs Guns’ legitimacy as a band that writes emotionally affecting songs instead of merely a group of quirky instrumentalists with an above average command of their form.
Despite the tightness of this trio’s musical interplay, 13.0.0.0.0 overall suffers from a homogenous sound.
13.0.0.0.0 is a solid album with beautiful moments, but in the end, it lacks the grit that could push TTNG higher.
The tracks are less punchy than before and perhaps more subdued, though this is the sort of music that needs to be immersed in and often takes time to truly appreciate.
Its fervent technicality can leave it feeling soulless, lacking grit, bite or real emotion. It can become stifling and songs tend to blur together.
Hearing Cat Fantastic for the first time was awesome when I discovered this band. I couldn't even notice the band had changed vocalists between Animals and 13.0.0.0.0. Also hearing the addition of a new bass player playing out more on a TTNG record was nice to hear as well. One thing this album suffers from is consistency, though I'm really glad the band decided to branch out more and experiment with their sound.
