Squeezed synths, squeaky brass, sliding whistles, and pre-set keyboard melodies are all deployed at various points, yet in Flory's hands they assume a peculiar beauty.
That mix of light and dark dominates the record: while Flory sings of, on the surface at least, dark times, the music finds ways to soar above it all.
The cover boasts 'No Thrills', but listen to the music inside and you'll know nothing can be further from the truth.
‘No Thrills’ is an exaggeration, but he’s certainly misplaced some of them.
