It’s its own organic creature, and Sudden Elevation proves this, as she comfortably moves between gentle cooing, spiralling softly downwards on a single syllable, or multi-tracking her voice evoking a sense of playfulness.
Sudden Elevation is yet another solid display of Arnalds’ talents and is arguably the LP that most newcomers to the singer-songwriter should arrive at first.
Arnalds’s music is based upon tradition and the tiny innovations that an awareness of those traditions allows rather than novelty
Arnalds' song-writing is astoundingly complex at times, effusively simple at others; threading liquid harmonies through her quirky falsetto and pirouetting upon melodies.
It’s Ólöf's wonderful vocals that are ‘Sudden Elevation’s highlight though.
On this record it’s all too common for the songs to merely float by, neither enticing you to pursue nor burdening you into reflection, which is a shame as Ólöf is more than capable of writing stunning songs.
