CRITIC REVIEWS

Drowned in Sound

For a record that is largely improvised, it is stunning that such a cohesive piece can be put together.

The two releases may have similar origins, but there’s a distinct contrast in mood: the first LP stews, while this one soars. Rather than the rigorous, high-minded formalism that one might expect of a group that counts Frahm among its members, there’s youthful playfulness at hand on Oddments.

80
Clash

More than simply a side project and definitely not just a collection of cast-offs, ‘Oddments Of The Gamble’ is a remarkably cohesive listen for something assembled over time and without restrictions.

Exclaim!
At this point, it almost seems like nonkeen have amassed a universe of beautiful music — they're just doling it out to listeners piecemeal, allowing us brief glimpses into their starry cosmos.

The Line of Best Fit
Space is very much the place for these three gentlemen, and their ability to haunt and craft galactic jazz is one that only the Gods themselves can match.

Consequence of Sound

While the gamble reached mystic atmosphere and engrossing seamlessness, this record delivers its dose of bliss through more push and pull. The musicians seem to be interacting with each other, rather than uniting as a sort of Voltron of jazz/post-rock/krautrock beauty.

AllMusic
The album might actually have a better flow than its sibling.

Under The Radar

The musical direction of this album doesn't diverge from the tape-heavy, field-recording based style nonkeen have established for themselves previously. This is all well and good and makes for a solid record, but the album highlight lies where the formula changes somewhat.

Tiny Mix Tapes

Oddments of the Gamble is the trio’s second album, and while it is ostensibly a collection of tracks that didn’t make the cut for the band’s early 2016 debut The Gamble, it is actually a stronger album, at once more delicate and more whole.
