If you thought the bonus disc would just be crappy outtakes, then you don't know Cox. Weird Era Cont. is surprisingly great in its own right, allowing Deerhunter to join Los Campesinos! in the two-good-albums-in-2008 club.
Now THIS is the Deerhunter I know. "Weird Era Cont." is what I needed from Deerhunter after Microcastle. It sounds fun, lively, creative, and weird. These songs can grab your attention and make you listen vividly. They'll make you feel emotional in the best ways and they'll make you rethink your definition of Deerhunter. The whole record reads like an acid trip, with a climactic finish that will have you in tears. I hoped that they would've built up this sound even more on their next ... read more
Deerhunter Discography #4:
Not as good as I remember, especially the second half.
Before my discography dive, Weird Era Cont. was the 3rd Deerhunter album I listened to after Cryptograms and at the time, it blew everything else out of the water and it was the only Deerhunter album that made me definitively say 'wow, I really like this!'. I loved it a month ago and I thought it was deserving of a low 90s score. Today, I wonder what past me was thinking. I said I 'loved' Weird Era Cont. in my ... read more

Of the Deerhunter records, this one is a little weaker than their best but it’s still good and has some great moments. Structurally it’s a bit all over the place because of moments like Dot again, Vox Humana, and the title track. But then you also have stuff like Cavalry Scars, which is genuinely amazing and is some of the best stuff this band has put together. I also really like the atmosphere and guitar work of Vhs Dream. Definitely not my favorite Deerhunter album but ... read more
Yeah this is very similar in sound to Microcastle, sadly its much worse executed. This album is a bit of a mess mostly in a good way though at least. I like the very random and manic nature of the tracks here, it feels very much like a collection of random ideas they had thrown into something which is definitely the vibe it was going for. I wish it was most consistently structured cause that does warrant a better album experience. I think that the songs can be very nice and catchy, as well as ... read more
I wish it were more consistent and focused on a more cohesive sound like Microcastle did. The closer is one of their best songs ever tho
An amazing sister to "Microcastle", further enhancing the lush, bright, saturated mixes of shoegaze, indie rock, and krautrock to make something very colorful and euphoric, as it is exciting and propulsive. I may prefer it over Microcastle on some days, the texture of this album alone is enough to make it a must-listen.
