Where 2011’s Mind Bokeh tried out its dancing shoes in a dozen different genres but never found one to go home with, Silver Wilkinson is a more streamlined yet enjoyably disparate record.
It resonates without making much noise. After years of tinkering with different sonic themes, it seems an understated approach works best.
There are some breathtakingly beautiful tracks on Silver Wilkinson, particularly towards its finale, familiar enough to suggest that the producer has gone back to his roots, and different enough to suggest that Wilkinson's not going to be resting on his laurels any time soon.
Even with some of its more unpredictable moments, Silver Wilkinson offers a scenic route through Bibio's music that showcases its depth as well as its breadth.
‘Silver Wilkinson’ is an album that combines all the facets of Bibio’s character that have made him such an interesting and, at times, frustrating musician.
He’s always been interested in redefining himself musically and Silver Wilkinson could actually turn out to be the boldest reorienting of his sound yet (if not ultimately quite the most successful).
The problem is that while Ambivalence Avenue was a pleasant surprise in all forms, an astounding leap from an unexpected source that constantly offered new sounds, Silver Wilkinson provides the same thing without the surprises.
In the age of chillwave and Instagram, one can’t necessarily fault Wilkinson for losing his taste for kitsch. But one hopes he needn’t lose his taste for feeling in the process.
Going organic may have its advantages, but for Stephen Wilkinson it's a move that doesn't come naturally.
Not bad. Not bad at all from the holy Bibio.
Apparently this guy has over a million monthly listeners on Spotify. Over here on AOTY this 2013 album of his only has like 3 reviews and the most recent one being from six years ago. The other two are from over a decade ago. Shout out to @HazeyJane and @JustinSlick y'all are the OGs and I respect you guys for participating in this site back when I was in middle school. Shout out to @CheapandLethal as well for being that third review. You are just ... read more
Loved it, but I admit, I'm a sucker for this kind of music. The last track is still playing in loop :)
It's not really a remarkable album aside from a few stand-out tracks, but I have a real weakness for stuff like this. Give me Tycho, Bibio, and a new Boards album and I'm a pretty happy camper.
