One True Vine sounds at once contemporary and true to Staples’ lengthy career and history.
Downhome gospel infuses the lean arrangements, providing a gritty undertow that juxtaposes the ’70s gospel/soul-pop icon’s forged plain dirt ’n’ fire alto.
Throughout, Tweedy and company give Mavis even more room than on You Are Not Alone. While this isn't as exciting, the grip is instant, hard to break.

One True Vine is a neat reminder, if any were needed, that Mavis Staples has a voice that has matured from merely outstanding to one of the most unique and perfect going today.
One True Vine tarries too long in doubt before finally breaking that dour spell and inviting the listener in on the celebration.

Staples and Tweedy’s partnership may not catapult her to renewed fame, but it continues to throw up some of the most sparkling moments of their respective careers.
