Side-projects can often slide into pomposity and plenty of over-egging, but Between the Walls is firmly focused upon slow jams and introspective moments.
For those prepared to take the rough with the smooth, there are many moments of exquisite beauty to enjoy on this record.
At times, Between the Walls is a frustrating album, but more often than not, the risks About Group take pay off in expressive, rewarding music.
It’s still an enjoyable listen and an admirable project, and one that will continue to draw curiosity, even without Charles Hayword.
Between the Walls sounds significantly more prepared than both prior outings, its many synth, organ, drum, and guitar textures more attentively placed.
When they do collaborate though, is when the album really shines.
