The Skinny

Jersey Devil feels initially like breezy easy-listening, but it turns out to be a shaded, more nuanced record than the clear-cut college rock of his previous solo record, St. Catherine.

The Line of Best Fit

There’s discrete style shifts in this record but there’s nothing overly wayward or drastic. This should come as a testament to Ducktails as he’s bloody good at what he does, and that’s exactly what we’ve come to appreciate him for.

With this project now his primary outlet ... ‘Jersey Devil’ comes with a real sense of sharp focus; cleverly worked melodies and handsomely crafted choruses come to the fore, pushing the woozy soundscapes to the back.

Ducktails’s Jersey Devil stays true to its low-fi, chillwave aesthetic yet manages to feel fresh through its introduction of groovier tones and branching away from melancholic haziness.

AllMusic

While not his most consistent crop of songs, light brushes with Steely Dan-like jazz-rock and bolder synths add flavor to a still distinctive sound that's likely to be welcomed by fans.

Under The Radar

Mondanile doubles down on his chillwave artistry, rather than seeking inspiration from expanding repertoire.

It's a shame because I like Ducktails music, but I can't listen to music made by a scumbag.

By the time i was halfway i had to call it a day. Matt's singing doesn't stick with the overall performance - the auto-tune deflates his vocal range and accentuates the loss of something missing away in the coalitions of instruments and tone. As a consequence the elements can't fully embrace the harmonies.
Besides, the ground in which the band sows make it even tougher to tune in to the simplest arrangements - the weight of the influences mounting crushes each and every upwelling of ... read more

didn't expect to enjoy this LP that much... catchy hooks and jangly solos. Wearing a Mask is a gem
