Stranger Than Fiction burnishes Gates’ bona fides as a deft storyteller and lyricist who knows the devil is in the details.
The 18-track release serves more as a bandage for interpersonal afflictions than dagger for now-forgotten adversaries.
Kevin reminds me of a mixture of Future (who I dislike) and Young Buck (who I like), particularly when he yells and the topics at hand. There are too many similar-sounding beats and songs here, but the good ones driven by contagious hooks-Future's strength if he has one-make songs worthy of replaying.

Sounds dated as hell, but that
"Shorty look good but her friend look better
Wish I woulda known that before I even met her"

Underrated, ignored and overlooked can all be used to describe Gates positioning in today's hip hop scene. This is despite the several mixtapes under his belt. Stranger than Fiction is a solid debut album from one of the most listenable, raspy-voiced street-hop narrators. The sometimes monotonous trap house beats are the only serious shortcoming in this otherwise solid album.
