Alice Glass can feel more like an exorcism than an evolution, a digestion of past trauma rather than a new chapter. But processing this stuff takes years, and sometimes a six-song “fuck you” is exactly the catharsis you need to start anew.
None of these songs reach the anthemic highs (or blistering insanity) of Glass's biggest hits with Crystal Castles, but its balanced mood gives pointed new dimensions to her emotional intensity and shows she is just as compelling in gentle mode as she is going wild on stage.
I'm fairly certain most people were on Team Alice during the great Crystal Castles split of 2014-2015, especially as former bandmate Ethan Kath began releasing childish statements trivializing Glass's involvement with the band. He came off as both an egomaniac and a hypocrite - for someone so quick to minimize Glass's contributions, he had no problem recruiting a Glass-soundalike to take over vocal duties for their limp, unremarkable fourth album.
