Perhaps there are moments where texture trumps composition, but overall In a World Like This is a surprisingly mature and fine record from a former boy band that seems unafraid to act its age.
Free of Jive, and now truly on their own, and reunited with Richardson, the Backstreet Boys are definitely “boys” no longer. Here they continue to make a solid case for being able to stand on their own two feet.
The problem is, these contemporary sonic elements don’t suit the Backstreet Boys’ strengths—in fact, the album’s slick production makes the vocal melodies and harmonies sound disappointingly generic.
What a way to finish the Backstreet Boys discography. It's basically them taking One Direction's style but doing it a lot better. It's great pop music, what can I say?
