Citizen haven’t mellowed per se, the emotion on ‘As You Please’ is as grand and raw as ever, but they have refined their delivery, and their latest album manages not to shortchange that underlying sentiment while expanding their sonic palette.

Alternative Press

As You Please is patient, breathy, sweeping and slower-moving than usual, chock full of unexpected tics—tonal effects, falsetto vocal flourishes, piano, acoustic intercuts, keyboards, electronic glitches—while remaining firmly in the alt-rock lane.

The Line of Best Fit

AYP is the moodiest and most melodic of the band’s (short) career, meaning it’s an album that will surely earn the band the reductive and often cringeworthy ‘emo’ tag - that is, if Everybody didn’t already. It’s also the band’s strongest set of songs to date.

AllMusic

As You Please can sometimes come across as overly dour, but Citizen are masters of uneasiness and wield that power like a sword.

Pitchfork

With 12 songs of nearly equal tone, volume, and length, the nearly hour-long As You Please becomes its own endurance test. When As You Please is taken in smaller chunks, the minor variations between the songs where Citizen churn and the ones where they steamroll ever forward become more discernible.

Citizen are a band that thrive on the sensitive and emotive, yet much of As You Please insists upon thundering brutishness.

Overall Rating: 87 out of 120 = 73%

Overall Opinion: It's a solid and average rock/emo album. It doesn't even come close to the feeling and emotion that Sorority Noise brings which is why I'm so shocked that this band is the headliner on their tour. As the Mad ... read more
