On BLUE LIPS, Lo refines her unmistakable sounds and moods more satisfyingly than she did on Lady Wood, and transforms betrayal and denial into some of her finest songs.
Like Tove Lo herself, ‘Blue Lips’ isn’t perfect; it has a predilection towards being over produced. Thematically, though, her honesty about her imperfections is what makes all so irresistible.
Blue Lips invites listeners to really consider the way media and the world looks at sex and drugs. It asks listeners to challenge the taboos placed on women’s ability to exercise their freedom of expression.
Despite some blander moments on the record that drag it down, it’s one of the year’s strongest pop releases.
Blue Lips feels like the end of a night, when everything that once sparkled under the disco ball is now revealed under brash and unforgiving lights as rock bottom.
An explicit testament to Lo’s chaotic love life, an unashamedly sexual and emotionally impactful piece of work. Lo ends up baring much more of her soul than her body.
It'd be easy to dismiss as softcore shock-pop if her songwriting wasn't so formidable.
Solid if formulaic, Blue Lips peaks with unfaltering vocals and the kind of humid, polished production that would make Jack Antonoff jealous.

Up to this point all the albums I’ve listened to have been pretty good, with a few duds here and there, but overall they have been solid and I’ve enjoyed myself. This is the first album that has actively blown me away, from front to back ... read more
Unapologetically sexual, sad, and free. 'Blue Lips', also known as Lo's best project so far, depicts a very real and raw Tove Lo, one that fails, has its peaks, and that is self-aware of everything and confident despite her surroundings and struggles. If this is considered "generic alternative pop" music, then I guess she hit the roof. A very vulnerable statement.
