Does Ferg both overcome and uphold the moniker of A$AP in this, his first major solo effort: yes.
Though Trap Lord's vision is refracted through split personalities-- for better or for worse-- A$AP Ferg still sounds like a star in the making.
There's nothing on Trap Lord to suggest Ferg will follow A$AP Rocky onto the pop charts, but it's a rewardingly dark and grounded listen.
Originally planned as a mixtape, there’s an unfinished feeling to Trap Lord, which in turn lends a lot of promise to the eventual follow-up.
The tight weaving of the dreamy A$AP productions with Ferg’s rebel stance sees Trap Lord teeter somewhere between bullish and elegant, and when it’s well executed it’s a delight.
Overall, A$AP Ferg’s Trap Lord, is a solid, if an sometimes-uninspired effort. It occupies that zone between the mindless “turn up” music and projects that have gotten a praise for being entertaining enough to at least partially negate a desire for more depth.
It’s a fun ride, to be sure, but once the high wears off and all that’s left is the darkness, you can catch a faint glimpse of oblivion.
Rocky and Ferg (mainly Rocky obviously) are the only members of the A$AP Mob that I really care for. I guess A$AP Twelvyy has some decent songs, but he’s kinda mid at best. The other rappers in the A$AP Mob are pretty bad if I’m being honest. If there was any essential album from the members of the A$AP Mob that wasn’t from Rocky or one of the Cozy Tapes projects, it’s this one. It's pretty wild looking at this release compared to the quality of music that Ferg is releasing currently. Some of these songs seemed pretty ahead of its time and this will probably go down as a trap classic. I wish he still had the touch.
