RakkSmells has died.
Lightning Bolt deliver an overblown, explosive, bass-heavy, crappily-recorded and repetitive collage of an album, and end up making an album where none of those things are bad qualities. It all adds to the charm of this off-the-wall and noisy beast of a rock album which will more than likely give you a headache if played at a really high volume, but that headache will be worth it. It's addicting, memorable and is the perfect supply of noise rock bops.

Day 29.
This thing is fucking BRUTAL. This is one of the most intense noise rock albums I've heard and I love it. While it's not as harrowing as something like You Won't Get What You Want, it definitely feels like a constant punch in the face and stomach. While there isn't too much "context" going on, I can forgive that for just how intense this album felt, and how much I enjoyed it from front to back, each song pounded my fucking skull into the floor.
The ending to Duel in the Deep ... read more
the best headache you'll ever get
some of the songs are a bit too repetitive for me and the snare sucks st. anger levels of ass, but got damn if it doesnt go hard as hell, and sometimes that's enough to make a decent album. i especially enjoy the breakbeat drum rhythms on On Fire, and Dracula Mountain is just heavy as fuck. most of the deep cuts dont make their mark however, and pail in comparison to the first half. also, Duel in the Deep sounds like utter ass
FAVORITE: Assassins, Dracula ... read more
Ohh, so this is what it's like to have your brain fried inside of a microwave? Gotcha.
Honestly, it's quite apt that the band is named 'Lightning Bolt', because this album sounds like if you were to get struck by Lightning. Also because everything is played up to the absolute extreme at such a blistering pace. I kinda knew what I was in for the moment I saw that they toured with Melt-Banana, but even then, I was still surprised with how chaotic this was. If you at all enjoy acts like Black ... read more
This album is a "Wonderful Rainbow" of pure NOISE rock! Everything is such a blissfully explosive assault to the senses, with Brian Chippendale's raw snares and Brian Gibson's heavy, effects-flooded bass noise coming through those awesome riffs! The instrumentation and production is absolutely batshit insane, relentless and sounds like utter shit, which is pretty much what makes this band so charming!

They were really ahead of their time with a title "30,000 Monkies".
This sounds like sending your grandma down the stairs.
EDIT 92 ----> 94: Just appreciating the small things about this album... :)
Crackhead drumming, loud bass riffs, and distorted inaudible vocals... A certainly interesting and unique noise rock record released by the duo in the 00's.
The album remains to be interesting and catchy with each song despite it's chaotic energy throughout. It's a quite genius record with noise that may sound painful to hear but just bangs so hard especially if you are a fan of this kind of stuff. It's the kind of ... read more
It picks itself up enough at the end to be a little enjoyable, but I was honestly bored by most of this. The transition from Hello Morning into Assassins is one of the best moments in Noise Rock, but most of the rest of the album falls extremely short, especially from Dracula Mountain to Crown of Storms. It is far too repetitive and one sided, no matter how crushing the instrumentation is. The lack of substance really holds it back sadly.
There’s a spectrum to music with bad snares.
On one end you have St. Anger.
And on the other you have Wonderful Rainbow.
Significantly more low fidelity than that of previous Lightning Bolt albums I’ve listened to, but it’s no less blistering and insane that’s for sure. Maybe even more so. Some of their best tracks are definitely on this album.
Standout: 2 Towers
Favs: Duel in the deep, On fire, Longstockings, 30,000 Monkies, Dracula Mountain
Least fav: Crown of storms
The first half of this album is probably the peak of noise rock alongside YWGWYW
The second half of the album's pretty alright
Fav tracks: Assassins, Dracula Mountain, 2 Towers (standout), On Fire, Crown of Storms, 30000 Monkies
Least fav track: Longstockings
