If Backwater, made across the world and somehow pulled together back in Lam's Melbourne studio, is what Kllo can achieve in the eye of the storm then whatever comes next has to be worth looking out for.
Backwater is a fantastic debut album from a duo who have prioritized their sound over chart baiting success. The result is a mature, subtle record ready for dancefloors and living rooms alike and a testament to the ever-strengthening Australian electronic scene.
Backwater might just reel in listeners strongly enough that they take deep dives into each and every track individually. And even then, Kllo’s mystery remains intact.
Kllo’s Backwater outlines the struggles of being idle and being pushed outside your comfort zone. This being their most complete and mature release, the band’s creative dynamic remains organic, allowing them to adjust themselves to a rhythm of their choosing, as they evolve as musicians and as a two-piece band with a wide range of possibilities.
Backwater is a mature, rich effort that's likely to see Kllo continue on their ascent.
The pair have made a name for themselves in the last couple of years with their captivating blend of 2-step rhythms and tender R&B vocals, and this is on offer in abundance on ‘Backwater’.
The Australian duo’s debut full length features warm, pleasing vocal lines and electro-pop beats, but it never coheres to tell the kind of story they want to tell.
I'm a sucker for some electropop and this group consistently does it very well. Perfect music for a night drive. I've been pretty addicted to this group lately and this was their last project I had yet to listen to fully. Their discography is super consistent. Both EPs and both albums are really good. I'm glad I found them!
