We knew Sky Larkin had potential. It’s been more than followed up on with Motto, surely one of the best albums of the year.
The songs are simple and concise, but have myriad twists on simple guitar motifs, making matters seem fresh and explorative.
Where Sky Larkin were once winsome and breezy, ‘Motto’ pounds ahead with heart-punching defiance and desperation to be heard. Listen up.
There's an increased steel running through 'Motto' - an extra thump, a stronger arm - but never played in a way that disrupts the chemistry.
While still plenty noisy and messy-headed, Sky Larkin sound their most organized on Motto, and the deeper focus they apply to their energetic sounds is what makes the end results work better than any of their previous albums.
