The best that can be said of Defend Yourself is that it isn't embarrassing; they didn't lose the plot like the Pixies, and it's better than The Sebadoh simply because they got out of that L.A. studio and back to their roots.
By shaving Sebadoh of its scruff, Barlow, Jason Loewenstein, and Bob D’Amico narrow down their palette to the kind of alt rock sound that was popular around the time Sebadoh recorded The Sebadoh.
It’s a largely murky affair punctuated by a few bright spots of that old-time Barlow sadness. The sound remains the same, but the songs aren’t always there.
decided to listen to their worst album after I listened to what's probably their best, and yeah it's pretty mid. there's 2 other albums from this band that I've heard a lot of songs on but haven't coherently listened to yet, and they both sounded pretty good. hoping this is a one time mid album.
14 years later, they can't change the world but they can be loyal to their creativity (although a bit aged).
