From the opening evocation of Case as a twister searching for an absentee lover on This Tornado Loves You, the album lives up to the billing.
A.V. Club

Middle Cyclone, is in the same exploratory mode as 2006’s Fox Confessor Brings The Flood, as Case tries to discover what she can eke out of just a little shimmer, some elliptical lyrics, and her big, yelping voice.

Moody and engaging throughout, Cyclone is another tour de force from Neko Case, if not as immediately arresting as Fox Confessor.

Middle Cyclone is a solid follow-up to Fox Confessor. While it's not as powerful, it keeps strong performance like "this tornado loves you" or "People gotta lotta nerve".
Fairly uninspiring
Neko Case's "Middle Cyclone" shouldn't be praised solely for being "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood"'s successor, but for being its own alternative country treasure. An underrated segment of the genre that the artist aced really well through the 15-track project. Props to "Vengeance Is Sleeping" for being one of the most solid songs of the piece.
