PopMatters

Lavender is an album in motion. Nandi Rose Plunkett -- the mastermind behind the project -- has made name for herself as an artist who delicately yet deliberately searches for home. Lavender continues this journey through 12 tracks that are fantastically in flux.

The 405

We are on our own, and Half Waif knows there's beauty in that. A scary, fucked up kind of beauty. Consider Lavender a salve. Or, at least, an honest, genuine listen.

80
The Skinny

She’s always been a powerful performer, but she’s nailed the careful art of crafting an album with Lavender; its stories, themes and tunes echo each other powerfully.

80
Loud and Quiet

‘Lavender’ is Half Waif on defiant form and using the full breadth of her songwriting talents. Versatile and precisely put together it’s both a funeral song for life before the chaos that seems to plague the world today and an attempt to inspire life within it.

80
NME

In Half Waif’s quest for some kind of calmness they’ve actually made an album that, inwardly, burns furiously.

80
Tiny Mix Tapes

According to song, rhythm fails to appreciate the richness of language and line, whose contours simply can’t stand rhythm’s cyclic habits. A reckoning will be required. On her latest, Lavender, musician Nandi Rose Plunkett splits the difference, giving us gorgeous songwriting bathed in infectious synth pop.

80
Clash
Worthy of comparison to the late career stylings of Björk, Plunkett’s vocals often steal the limelight but, make no mistake, this album is considerably more than the sum of any individual part.
80
Northern Transmissions

While there’s often a brooding energy and slow pace to the record, it’s easy to find its songs going somewhere wondrous.

If 'Lavender' is less of a high-water mark and more of an encouraging development, then audiences should expect Half Waif's LP3 to contend for album of the year in 20--.
78
Pitchfork

A woozy dynamic of pushing people away while simultaneously drawing them close courses throughout Lavender, a striking album of beautifully rendered and deeply layered synth-pop.

70
AllMusic

Throughout, very human lyrics, wistful intervals, a mechanical palette, and components that are sometimes altered to confuse organic and inorganic make for an elegant synth art-pop. Like the world her lyrics inhabit, it is icy and intimate at once.

60
DIY
While it can be an emotionally turbulent listen that continually returns to the fracturing of the self and the breaking apart from others, this is also an album that is deeply arresting and vital, a reminder that these ruptures are a part of the rocky terrain of life.

I like how cohesive the album is. The more pop songs in the first half of the album really pull me in and the second half is so interesting lyrically

Edit: The themes of loss and feeling homeless really resonates with me and has made this a grower for me especially the track Salt Candy
Faves: Keep it Out, Lilac House, Solid 2 Void

Not your mom's pop music. Ms. Plunkett follows up her wacky debut with a more streamlined, narrative-based album. Her vocals and songcraft create pop music that sparkles with vulnerability. A strong cup of feels for a rainy day.

Lavender is an amazing dark synth-art-pop album, full of emotions with a strong lyrical content and impressive production. Very recommended for whoever likes synthpop albuns with a art pop touch.

Favs: Lavender Burning, Torches, Keep It Out, In the Evening, Silt, Parts and Salt Candy.
