These songs have the wave-like flow of electronic dance tracks but with the expansive, acoustic atmosphere of classic ECM recordings.

Overall, A Humdrum Star is GoGo Penguin’s most cohesive, pleasing record to date.

‘A Humdrum Star’ is another strong effort from Go Go Penguin. Those who’ve follow the band since their 2012 debut album will essentially know what to expect here, as the record is a refinement of the group’s pre-existing sounds and interests rather than a bold shift in a new direction but, when the results are this impressive, that’s no concern.
‘A Humdrum Star’ feels like a step beyond the precious experiments of their opening records, a concise and complete statement that defies categorisation and reinforces the vitality of UK jazz at this moment.
The 405

A Humdrum Star is largely successful and in a perfect world will be just one of a great many formal experiments for the band.
