The Needle Drop

Lil Yachty makes a return to form with Lil Boat 2.

HipHopDX

There isn’t a ton of apparent lyrical growth or profound substance but there are a few agreeable songs for all audiences.

NME
If he’s hoping to allay his numerical problems of 2017 – that is producing an album which’ll convince those millions to stream, download or share it en masse – then sadly ‘Lil Boat 2’ is unlikely to win him many new admirers.

Pitchfork

The issue is that an album reliant on Yachty’s ability to rap can’t hold up to scrutiny. He is a rather spiritless writer. He only has a couple of rough song ideas. He is incapable of fitting his outsized personality into his pedestrian bars.

50
Rolling Stone

It might all work better if Yachty could speak his lines as well as he croons them. But he can't, at least not on Lil Boat 2.

50
Spectrum Culture
His ponderous, deadpan voice works great when he’s singing. He sounds childish, innocent, unguarded. But it doesn’t work nearly as well when he’s rapping; he just sounds dumb.

The Guardian

The music that made him famous was lightweight but fun. This, by contrast, feels like a trudge.

Exclaim!

While sometimes amateurish, Yachty's older music was at least true to his lived experiences. Today, he's just another dreadlocked cipher mouthing predigested banalities.

40
Highsnobiety

The thing that’s difficult to grasp about Lil Boat 2 is that it seems to purposefully undo so much of the work that Yachty has done in the past few years to separate himself from the pack.

AllMusic

Lil Boat 2 doesn't pick up where the source of "One Night" and "Minnesota" left off, characterized instead by antagonism that comes off as defensive -- and sometimes disgruntled -- rather than mischievous.

I know this review is late, but I wasn't on AOTY yet when this was released, and I see you guys are doing this album dirty.

Lil Boat 2 is such a 2018 rap album, and competes with Lil Boat 1 for most solid Yachty release. This album is full of bangers. Catchy lyrics and flow, and sweet and sticky beats fill this album with a very pleasant listening experience. SELF MADE is a great intro for what comes next... BOOM!, which has a very silly and catchy chorus from Yachty before Ugly God comes in ... read more

Boat's turned evil on this one boys! Lil Yachty just feels more at home with a darker sound. Teenage Emotions was an ambitious effort, but just was too far out of bounds for Yachty. Genuinely haven't felt that infectious nature of a Yachty tape since the first Lil Boat mixtape. Glad to know he wasn't a shot in the dark now having released Lil Boat 2.

It's like he took all of the feedback and all he got out of it was "do more gross-out bars" and doubled-down on that. Some of these bang but it's beginning to look like Lil Boat 1 was a fluke.
