CRITIC REVIEWS

100
The Observer
It is full of indecipherable songs, swaddling the brutal clarity of the techno DJ-producer duo’s early singles in something unpredictable, off-kilter. Choral vocals make you feel everything from terrified to strangely soothed.
80
The Skinny
It’s a creative, energised exploration of the power of both the human voice and electronic music to move us.
80
NME
Named after undulating formations of starlings, sixth album ‘Murmurations’ is about movement and space as much as their earlier albums were about minimalism and melody; from start to finish, it has the feel of sounds bouncing off the walls of a vast chamber.
80
AllMusic

Murmurations is a standout moment for Deep Throat Choir, while in the Simian Mobile Disco canon it sits as an interesting and pleasant experience but, ultimately, a sideline in their discography.

musicOMH

An intriguing and powerful release, Simian Mobile Disco prove with Murmurations that they are still as vital as ever.

The Line of Best Fit
It feels like a fitting release for the duo who’ve been going for so long. The search for new ideas is always on, and with this one, they’ve found a winner that offers something a bit different, while not alienating.

Resident Advisor

Whatever the mood, the music always sounds free and unlaboured. Shaw and Ford have never shied away from experimentation and risk. Murmurations is as rewarding for the listener as it must've been for the artists.

75
Pitchfork

Murmurations represents a breakthrough. It’s thrilling to imagine where Simian Mobile Disco might go next; here’s hoping they get the chance.

60
Exclaim!
It lacks both the cultural depth of world music and the dynamic disco beats of their earlier offerings.
60
The Independent
As symbiotic as much of this album is, there are times when the combination of human and machine doesn’t entirely fit.
50
Spectrum Culture
It’s always good to leave listeners wanting more, sure, but let’s hope this is more an opening salvo than the main course.

God Is in the TV

Sorry SMD, I love you dearly, but I’m going to blast out Delicacies for the thousandth time, and send Murmurations down the curtain to join the choir invisible where it belongs.

I never thought chanting could be this monotonous, but SMD have managed it. This album goes on and on without anything of interest. Sad

observations
- A Perfect Swarm and Defender are absolutely sublime.
- The vocal melody in V Formation makes me nauseous and I don't know why.
- You cannot chant "Hey Sister, Hey Sister" without invoking Lady Marmalade.
