Under The Radar

This is a companion piece of surprising merit that offers more depth to a characterful and potentially career-defining release.

A fine addition to the Zola Jesus discography, pun intended.

The remixes successfully enhance the best part of the original Okovi tracks and add beguiling elements.

Zola Jesus follows her exquisite career best with an EP of outtakes and remixes from the sessions that made Okovi. Out of the four new songs here, Bound is the strongest and another brilliantly pop moment that would have been right at home on Okovi. The remaining three, while good aren't as memorable. The four remixes are a nice take on her material and offer a different take, especially the Wolves in the Throne Room remix of Exhumed which reimagines Zola as the front woman of a metal band. ... read more
While this remains as just additions, I command Zola Jesus for doing something that is at par with Okovi overall production and great vocals. Maybe the thing is that these tracks are more similar to the boring part of Okovi rather than the agressive and strong part of it. This is actually an above average B-Sides and Remix Compilation. Most of these compilations nowadays, you get maybe one or two good tracks, but it's usually very clear to why these songs were left off of the album. "Okovi: Additions" however is a pleasant surprise. For the most part, the standalone tracks at the very least sound like they belonged on "Okovi", in some cases they probably would have been fantastic singles. And as far as the remixes go, you know what to ... read more
