AllMusic
Cage the Elephant have developed their own sound -- a sound that is hardly groundbreaking by 2000s standards, but is nonetheless their own sound. And they show considerable promise on this excellent album.

The Observer
The radio-friendly raunch of their beguilingly raucous debut is more reminiscent of a Southern Red Hot Chili Peppers replacing the bogus New Age patina with a healthy respect for Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Despite callow lyrics and what sounds like an unfortunate Nineties rock-rap influence ... Cage the Elephant make a fine mess on their debut

The Guardian
Cage the Elephant spent a lot of time in their youths listening to rap metal: the tempos and especially the semi-rapped phrasing of Matt Shultz summon an age when white men in baggy shorts and baseball caps bestrode the planet.

In the context of a studio recording, Cage The Elephant's premiere isn't far off insufferable.

Drowned in Sound
All Cage the Elephant have accomplished is a batch of songs that are just another symptom of the rock disease certain corners of the media claim these boys are here to cure.

Another childhood record, and one I've wanted to give a listen for awhile now. This is definitely an unbalanced record; the comments were kinda right. The second half doesn't compare to the first. Does that mean it's not worth listening to? No, absolutely not, the second half still has some really good stuff. But holy shit, Back Against the Wall and Ain't No Rest for the Wicked are phenomenal songs. Cage the Elephant is definitely one of the better bands in alt rock, and this self titled debut ... read more

Why would you cage an elephant wtf

I kinda think CTE is a bit of an overheated group imo, I’ve always liked them a lot. Their first record here is just really fun. Some really good hooks, raw production and pretty good songwriting. My favorite on here is definitely Tiny Little Robots, which has an awesome structure and melody. It just goes hard. Judas, Back Against the Wall, Free Love, and ofc, Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked are all bangers as well. Not mind blowing but just fun rock ... read more

(Analbumaday Day 326)

Cage The Elephant definitely have a cool style, one that I’ve heard used as inspiration plenty of times, and for good reason, it’s a crowd pleaser for sure. This is a strong debut album, plenty of catchy tracks and promising effort from the band, however, I find it to be hard to give my full focus, as it has a pretty repetitive or simple premise for the most part, and it became background music near the end. Definitely fun music, just not the most memorable ... read more

Listening to this album in full awoke me to the Idea that perhaps my appreciation of "Ain't no rest for the wicked" is just pure nostalgia. For that, I don't think I can forgive it.

We get it critics, you hate fun.

An incredible debut from an awesome garage rock band with a ton of stand out hits that make revisiting this album very enjoyable, and already they’ve made their sound known, one of their best
